Our Beginnings
Patrick’s mother, Annie, and Grandmother Rose, taught him the traditions and songs they remembered from their days.
Their influence was to lead Patrick to interview and record all the Elders he could find, so that their words and experiences will live on. What a treasure Patrick has left us in these recordings.
Patrick Orozco is Chumash and Juaneno. In 1960, Patrick married Sandra Silva, a Rumsen Carmel Ohlone woman, and they had two daughters.
In 1976, Patrick Orozco was invited to a local school in Watsonville,Ca. to teach the children about California native history, to sing songs, share stories and demonstrate his traditional regalia, abalone necklaces, clapper sticks, rattles and body paint. This was the beginning of Patrick’s work as a teacher.
Nine years later, Patrick formed the “Amah-Ka-Tura” dance group. Amah-Ka-Tura means the People of the Land. The dance group has helped many people find their way through life in a good way.

Terry does most of the research for new members, collecting, gathering and teaching the new dancers how to make there regalia and head dress.
Terry puts together outings and gatherings to the beach or the woods to gather materials and is always happy to have a group of kids with her, knowing that they are not sitting at home in front of a video game.
PVOIC Tech Support, Gary Orozco
Patrick Orozco’s son Gary Orozco, became a member of PVOIC in 1985 when the “Amak-Ka-Tura” dance group was formed. Not only is Gary a dancer, he is also our audio/video and computer tech support and responsible for building this web page.
Gary is always willing to share his knowledge.
